Part of our 16 game characters project, where we made a game concept and wrote up a concept doc for 16 characters and then each week we draw 4 of them. I'm still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't in digital painting for me.

I didn't give myself enough time for these since they got pushed in with the previous weeks and other schoolwork overwhelmed this weeks progress, so these four characters were completed in 2 very stressful days. My quality degraded rapidly.

If I start to become fairly successful with using my method, I'll make a tutorial for people to follow so they won't have to put forth the effort to try every method on the internet to end up having to make their own.. but that will have to be after this quarters over.

This quarter at Brown College I'm taking Character Development with Andrew Stafford, and I'm going to be uploading each drawing that I do for the duration of the quarter to see how my skills in character development get better throughout.

This is Week 9 : Drawing 3 : Hermes - The Infected


Theme: The game is set in Minnesota starting December 23, 2012, after the outbreak of 1U57- better known as the ‘Lust Virus’, discovered on December 21, 2012. The virus was originally believed to have been caused by the development of a new birth control pill that only needed to be taken once a year. The pill was made using the predigestive oxidents in the closed lobes of the Dionaea Muscipula plant. The pill was tested for a short period of time before it was released due to a problem found in the currently popular medication having been found to cause cancer. The chemical in the pill infected the female taking the medication, but showed no signs of any problems until she had sex after taking the medication for over one month’s time. The women were carriers of the virus which affected 100% of sexually active men that came in contact. Since many women quickly took up the replacement pill, and saw no problems with it for over a month, the pill caught on very quickly and before anything could be done the virus had its grip on society. On December 21, 2012 the first report of the virus came from the labs at the Mayo clinic. They noticed some very bizarre actions of cells interacting in a man’s blood that was tested for psychosis at the premiere hospital. They immediately put forth notice to the United States government to set forth a state of emergency for the state and looked into the causes of the virus. Quickly thereafter, strict enforcement of abstinence policies were set up and there were riots in the streets of people protesting these strict actions. The infection affected people from many age groups and by December 23, 2012 the vast majority of sexually active males in the United States were infected with the virus, and continued to spread through body fluids.
Symptoms of the virus are an intense desire to kill females; and as a second priority, anything alive. Women were faced with the challenge of fighting for their lives against their bosses, husbands, sons, fathers, and men from all social ranges and professions. The only few men left uninfected were the pure boys, young men and abstinent persons of society that hadn’t been bitten, sexually contacted, or otherwise came in contact with the virus.
You play as Tom who was a former student at Orange College and looking for a job at the time of infection and hadn’t contracted the virus due to his ideals of abstinence until affording a child seemed plausible. You are placed in Minnesota where the infected men are your enemies and the women that remain are your allies against them. You are grouped up with two other men who aren’t infected. An older guy named William and a 32 year old part time botanist and medical researcher named Larry. Along with them there are 8 women that are in your group trying to remain alive or are somehow connected to the group, as detailed later.
The game is a first person shooter where your goal is to aid Larry in getting supplies and keeping him alive in order to allow him to find a vaccine or cure for the virus, while resisting the temptation of the many remaining females. If you fail to do so, it would be the end of the human race, and if you fall to temptation, the same consequence occurs.

Each week we are given a theme and 4 archetypes based on Victoria Lynn Schmidt's book "45 Master Characters". We are given a week to draw a turnaround(front, side, back, and a 3/4 or action shot) for each archetype.
